Brian Ratcliff
Brian Ratcliff is a Devon-based fly tier and fly fisherman. Living in a small village with his wife and dog Sherman, Brian focuses much of his fishing on his local rivers, which boast a healthy population of wild Brown Trout and a good run of Sea Trout when conditions are favorable. He also enjoys fishing stillwaters and reservoirs.
Brian’s passion for fly fishing began at a young age, as it has been a long-standing tradition in his family. When it comes to fly tying, Brian embraces all styles and patterns. He finds immense satisfaction in sitting at his vice, hoping that the next fly he creates will be the one that connects him with a memorable trout.
Among the flies Brian has designed are the Ratcliff Nymph and the Old Man’s Earplug Muddler. The fact that these patterns bear his name indicates his creative contribution to the world of fly tying and suggests their effectiveness on the water.
Brian is a valued member of the pro teams for several prominent brands in the fly fishing and tying world. He is part of the pro teams for Renomed Scissors, known for their precision and quality, and RaidZap, whose UV resins he likely utilizes in his fly tying. With Maxcatch, Brian holds the roles of both pro team member and Ambassador/Consultant. He is also connected with Semperfli, showcasing their “Edgebrite Deadly Trout Lure” as part of their team. Furthermore, Brian is featured on the Ahrex Hooks website as a Devon-based trout fly tier and is also a member of their pro team, highlighting his preference for their hooks.
Brian is fortunate to have fantastic fishing opportunities in Devon. He often fishes his local rivers for Brown Trout and Sea Trout. When river conditions aren’t ideal, he seeks out small stillwaters or large reservoirs. In addition to his time on the water, Brian actively demonstrates his fly tying skills and shares his expertise at various events around the UK.
